Before you start
The lava lamp is kitchen science's best spectacle-per-effort ratio — a clear bottle two-thirds filled with oil, topped with coloured water (which sinks through, already a surprise), then a fizzing vitamin tablet dropped in. The bubbles grab blobs of coloured water, ferry them up, pop at the surface, and the blobs fall home — repeat for ten mesmerising minutes per tablet.
The science is honest and worth the one sentence: oil and water don't mix, water is heavier, and the gas bubbles are the lift. Then the variables become the game — warm water blobs faster than cold, salt poured in does the ferrying in reverse, and a torch behind the bottle in a dark room produces the actual lamp the name promised.
How it goes
The build
Oil to the two-thirds line (pouring practice with real stakes), then coloured water added slowly — and the first phenomenon lands before any tablet — the water beads DOWN through the oil to the bottom. Predictions were taken; most were wrong; this is the day working. Let each scientist choose colours — the two-colour bottle produces blob races later.
First eruption
Quarter-tablet in, and the show starts — bubbles seize blobs, ferry them up, drop them home. Narrate nothing for the first minute; the silence around a working lava lamp is the sound of attention. Then the one-sentence why, delivered while everyone's still watching the evidence.
The variable games
One change at a time, scientist's choice — warm water versus cold (warm blobs dance faster; feel free to ask why before telling), a whole tablet versus a quarter (chaos versus ballet), salt poured in as the alternative engine (it drags oil blobs DOWN then releases them — the reverse lamp). Each variation gets predicted first, watched, and ruled on. This is experimental method arriving as entertainment.
Lamp mode
Dark room, torch behind or beneath each bottle, fresh quarter-tablet — and the craft delivers its title — glowing, rising, falling colour in the dark, best watched lying down. Bottles cap and keep for days (fresh tablet each show); the bedroom encore is inevitable and the capped bottle makes a legitimately good night-light show before sleep.
Make it fit your kids
Colour-choosers and countdown officers — the build is done for them, the watching is fully theirs, and the torch-lit version before bed lands in exactly their weight class.
Full lab technicians — pouring, predicting, tablet-quartering (by adult, at their direction) and the variable games at their natural level. The wrongness of the water-sinks prediction delights them specifically.
The why-tier — density explained then challenged (why does the tablet sink but its bubbles rise?), the salt engine investigated properly, and a measured experiment (tablet size versus eruption time, stopwatch, table of results) if the mood is scientific.
One good bottle, a proper light base (torch in a mug), and the slow-motion phone footage — the satisfying-video genre meets actual chemistry, and the explanation sticks because they filmed the evidence.
Value oil, a tube of supermarket fizzing vitamins and the recycling's best bottle — the whole laboratory runs under two pounds and the oil rebottles for repeat shows.
If it’s going really well
- Density towers — honey, water, oil layered with cargo (grape, coin, cork) floating at each boundary; the lamp's stately cousin.
- The eruption-time trial — tablet fractions timed and graphed; the fridge gains a chart.
- Glitter lamps — a pinch in the water layer rides the blobs and the ferrying becomes visible traffic.
