A whole-day plan that runs like a real science fair. Morning is choosing a question and running the experiment properly — predictions written down before, results recorded during. Afternoon is making the poster and rehearsing the demo. The fair itself, with an audience, is what makes the science stick.

Before you start
The engine of this day is the question, and the trick is keeping it small and answerable by teatime. Which kitchen liquid melts an ice cube fastest? Does a paper plane fly further with a paperclip on the nose? Which biscuit survives longest in tea? A question they chose beats a better question you chose, every time.
The one rule that turns messing about into science: predictions get written down before the experiment, in ink, no edits. Being wrong on paper and finding out why is the entire scientific method in miniature — and kids handle it brilliantly when the wrongness belongs to the prediction, not to them.
How the day goes
The question session
Round the table, brainstorm questions until each scientist owns one. Steer toward the answerable-by-4pm ("which surface do toy cars roll furthest on?") and away from the cosmic ("why is space?"). Predictions written in the lab book, in ink, with reasons. Reasons are where the thinking lives.
Lab time
Run the experiments — and the word that does the heavy lifting is fair. Same size ice cubes? Same throw for every plane? Kids police fairness ferociously once they've spotted it; that instinct is experimental control arriving under its own steam. Everything measured gets written down, even the boring numbers. Especially the boring numbers.
Scientists' lunch
Results reviewed over sandwiches — did the prediction survive? Half-time verdicts. Any experiment that produced chaos instead of data gets one lunchtime rerun with a tightened method, which is honestly the most scientifically authentic moment of the day.
The poster session
Each scientist makes their fair poster — question at the top, what we did, a results table or bar chart, and the finding in big letters. The classic layout exists because it works. Rehearse the demo once — every presentation needs a live moment, even if it's just melting one more ice cube dramatically.
The fair
Posters up, audience assembled — the other parent, neighbours, a grandparent on video call. Each scientist presents for two minutes and takes one question from the floor. Rosettes for everyone, categorised so nobody wins at science — Best Demo, Boldest Prediction, Most Suspicious Result.
Make it fit your kids
Lab assistants with one job — pouring, stirring, pressing the timer. Their "experiment" is whatever's loudest and fizziest, and they present it at the fair by pointing and beaming.
One question, one variable, lots of help with the chart. The fair presentation is the bit they'll remember — let them hold the room as long as they like.
Real rigour is available here — repeat trials, averages, a control group. Introduce the idea that one result proves nothing and watch them rerun everything.

If it’s going really well
- The longitudinal study — one experiment (plant growth, mould race) that reports back weekly on the fridge door.
- Repeat the fair each school holiday; returning scientists must tackle a brand-new question.
