An hour building the family's fitness baseline the fun way — six stations, thirty seconds each, scores on the big chart, and the only opponent is your own last attempt. The monthly rematch is where it becomes a fixture; the chart is where it becomes a saga.

Before you start

The design problem with family fitness is the fitness gap — an adult versus a six-year-old is either a rout or a pantomime. The fix is the format: every score is a personal record, and the only contest is you-versus-last-time. Six stations, thirty seconds each, everything counted or timed — star jumps, plank hold, sock-ball basket shots, step-ups on the bottom stair, the wall-sit, the sprint shuttle down the hall. The chart holds everyone's numbers side by side without comparing them; improvement is the only column that gets cheered.

The thirty-second interval is the secret — short enough that nobody dreads a station, long enough to produce a real number, and the whole circuit fits inside twenty minutes, which leaves room for the rematch demands that start immediately.

How it goes

10 minutes

Circuit build

Set the six stations together and demo each — form matters more than count (a star jump is a STAR jump; the chart recognises no half-stars). Everyone predicts their scores first, in pencil, because the gap between prediction and reality is the hour's comedy and its lesson in one.

20 minutes

Round one

Rotate through — thirty seconds effort, thirty seconds move-and-breathe, one athlete per station with everyone cycling. Scores called out and charted immediately by the designated scribe (a coveted job; rotate it). Adults go full effort visibly — kids calibrate their honesty of effort against yours, and a parent visibly dying at the wall-sit is worth a hundred pep talks.

10 minutes

The recovery interval

Water, flopping and the chart review — predictions versus reality, the surprise strengths (someone's plank is always a shock), and each athlete picks ONE station to attack in round two. One, not all — focused improvement is the training principle being smuggled in.

Round two, chosen stations

Everyone re-runs their chosen station with the room watching — the improvement attempt as a performance, cheered on merit. New records circled on the chart in the good pen. Then the closing fixture — the date of the monthly rematch written at the chart's bottom, because the chart with a return date is a training program and the chart without one is a poster.

Make it fit your kids

2–4

They run a parallel circuit of their own physics — star jumps that leave the ground sideways, a two-second wall-sit celebrated like a title. Their scores go on the chart in their own crayon.

5–8

Full athletes with prediction-gap comedy at its peak — they'll lowball, smash it, and demand the good pen. The scribe job teaches them the chart is the sport.

9–12

Training logic lands — they'll pick their round-two station tactically, ask what makes a plank stronger, and start freelance practice before the rematch. Feed it with one technique tip per station, no more.

The chart is the hook — a posted number is an open challenge, and the family circuit quietly becomes their warm-up. Let them add one station of their own design; it will be brutal, and attendance at the rematch will be full.

Budget

Free entirely — the equipment is a wall, a hall, socks and gravity, and the chart is the back of last term's school letter.

If it’s going really well

  • The rematch cycle — monthly, same stations, records circled; six months of chart is a genuinely moving document.
  • Station of the season — one new challenge rotates in quarterly (skipping, balance holds, the dreaded burpee) to keep the circuit honest.
  • The relay conversion — same stations run as a team baton race when cousins visit and the format needs noise.
