An hour to build the family's daily eight minutes — seven simple moves chosen together, set to one agreed song, drilled until the sequence runs itself. The design goal isn't sweat, it's repeatability — a routine short enough to survive Tuesday and owned enough to survive boredom.

Before you start

This hour builds a product: the routine — seven moves, one song, same order daily — and the design constraints are what make it work. Short (one song, roughly three to four minutes, run twice), simple (moves everyone can do at their own intensity — marches, squats to a chair, star jumps, wall push-ups), and OWNED (every family member contributes at least one move, named after them, forever — "the Daddy Windmill" outlives all of us).

The routine beats the workout for families because it removes the daily decision — nobody negotiates what today's exercise is, because it's THE ROUTINE, same as teeth-brushing, and the song starting IS the instruction. Habit research and every parent's experience agree: the decision is the barrier, and the routine deletes it.

The move draft

Everyone pitches moves and demonstrates — the routine needs seven, mixing legs (marches, squats), arms (wall push-ups, the windmill), a jump (stars, or step-outs for knees that object), and one silly one (the wiggle, mandatory, position six — the silly move placed near the end is what carries everyone through the hard ones). Each move gets named after its contributor and drawn onto the chart by the art department.

10 minutes

The song summit

The daily song chosen by genuine consensus — it must survive daily play, energise without irritating, and run three-to-four minutes. This negotiation is real diplomacy; the winning candidate usually comes from the middle child. The routine maps onto it — roughly thirty seconds per move, transitions on the choruses, big finish on the outro.

The drill

The full routine run three times — first slow with the chart, second at tempo, third AS PERFORMANCE (this is the run where it becomes theirs — the windmill acquires flair, the wiggle acquires lore). Intensity self-scales by design — the four-year-old's squat and the parent's squat share a name and a beat, not a depth. By run three the sequence is in bodies, not on the chart.

The launch protocol

The when gets fixed — before breakfast and before school beat all other slots on survival data; the routine attaches to an existing anchor (kettle goes on, song goes on) rather than a clock time. The chart takes its wall spot, the song gets its own one-tap playlist, and the streak tracker (a tally, nothing fancier) starts tomorrow. Rule one, stated at launch — a missed day is a missed day, not a failed routine — the streak restarts without ceremony, because the routine's superpower is that it's always there tomorrow.

Make it fit your kids

2–4

They own the wiggle (obviously) and perform the routine at 60% accuracy and 130% commitment — their consistency shames everyone, because toddlers are the natural constituency of the daily ritual.

5–8

The routine's enforcement arm — they'll notice the skipped day, start the song themselves, and defend their named move's exact form against all drift. Chart artists in chief.

9–12

Programme designers — after a month they'll want progression (counts up, a harder variant, a second song for weekends). Grant it via the quarterly routine review, which they chair.

teens

The eight-minute format is the sell — short enough to be beneath resistance, and their contributed move (invariably from something they actually train) upgrades everyone. Attendance beats enthusiasm; both arrive eventually via the streak tally.

Budget

Free at every level — the moves are bodyweight, the chart is the back of a poster, and the song was already on the phone.
